Those are good points, Dare, and I agree. I guess I'm one of those "guilty" of working on OSS .NET projects that copy existing Java applications, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Java has 5 years ahead of .NET in tool support, so there's a niche to fill there.

So, we work on getting the better tools out there, like nant for example. Fortunately, the project seems to have gotten on its feet already, and some cool ideas that Ant doesn't have are in the works.

OTOH, I'd love to be able to contribute more. I have tons of things I'd like to do with .NET and open source, but I just don't have the time right now... I'm lucky I can spare some time a couple of days a week to work on nant and nantcontrib ;)

>So, to conclude today's rant, just let me say: Congrat's, Apache! I honestly wish someday we have such a thing on the .NET world!

Open Source software doesn't just happen. Someone has to a.) write truly useful [pssibly innovative] software , b.) give it away and c.) be interested in seeing that it doesn't die on the vine until there is enough momentum for it to live on its own without strict parenting from its original author.

Sadly, the few Open Source .NET projects I've seen are determined to simply clone existing Java applications or are trivial bits of software without wide application.

I'd get in the fray but unfortunately there is the issue of all the IP rights I signed away on employment. :)
